Condition.2015 conference on conservation and digitisation of cultural heritage.
Conservation
The conference will be devoted to the conservation of objects discovered during the exploration of the seabed and during land archaeological excavations. It will focus mainly on objects of organic origin (wood, rope, leather) and objects made of different metals.
A particularly difficult problem is the protection and conservation of large wooden objects such as parts of ships and boats. There is a problem connected with these objects regarding the methods for removing iron and sulfur as their presence causes the degradation of archaeological wood.
The exchange of experiences on conservation of composite objects made of various materials will allow to solve many problems occurring during conservation of such difficult objects.
Part of the conference will be devoted to analyses helpful in planning and preparation of a conservation method, checking its progress and evaluation of the results.
Theme scope has been divided on seven groups of issues:
-
Storage of archeological objects before conservation,
-
Conservation of waterlogged, archeological wood,
-
Iron and sulfur- problems of formation acids in organic materials,
-
Conservation of other organic materials (leather, rope etc.),
-
Conservation of different metals from wet environment,
-
Conservation of composite objects of various materials,
-
Analytical research of archeological objects essential for conservation.
Digitization
The theme of the conference are challenges and good practices of digitization concerning objects’ physical dimensions and environmental conditions in which they are digitally documented.
Emphasis will be set on untypical objects, difficult to document, with dimensions exceeding few meters, finally objects so heavy and so large that they have to be documented in situ.
The conference is thought to be a forum of exchange of experience, a review of applied 2D and 3D methods, including implementation of national and international projects.
As a result, the conference should help digitization specialists in choosing methods for digital documentation of untypical collections due to their physical features.
Theme scope has been divided on three groups of issues:
-
Digitization of large objects as well as digital documentation outside controlled studio environments:
-
Digitization 2D (area of application, ongoing or finished projects, standards and procedures, advantages and disadvantages of selected methods)
-
Digitization 3D (area of application, ongoing or finished projects, standards and procedures, advantages and disadvantages of selected methods)
-
2. Digital dissemination (publication, search efficiency, metadata, target groups)
3. Digitization efficiency (mass digitization, economy of scale, time, costs, workflow)
